Self-evaluation is very difficult

Have just observed to kd5mdk that I really have to make "something decent" for supper tomorrow as tonight I'm tired and my hip hurts and Mom and her newly-returned-from-Ottawa housemate are "just getting sausage and beans".

... Yes, that's right, Ladies, Gentlemen and Others:

I am forcing them to struggle through the night with nothing better to eat than free-range-lamb-and-organic-chickpea cassoulet and fresh soda bread. Made from scratch, if you don't mind really good quality canned chickpeas.

I FAIL AT GOOD DAUGHTER FOREVER. THEY WILL HAVE TO DRINK TO DULL THEIR PAIN.

*headdesks into the cutting board*

ETA: OTOH I just cut the soda bread with one of those oddly-shaped medium sized unexplained serrated knives that every kitchen seems to have three or four of, on account of the bread knife being in the dishwasher due to having been used earlier to slice a bun in half or something. Sadly, I got caught doing this.

MOTHER'S KNIFE BLOCK HELL:

I feel I should note: My mother DOES appreciate my cooking. I mean, she wishes I could do it without Moving Things, but she is vocally appreciative of my cooking.

Calmer consideration of the bread knife thing has caused me to realise this: my mother is having some short-term memory and concentration problems. Which she is doing her damndest to deal with without them compromising her independence.

So, you know, actually, yes, I think I DO need to be careful to respect her immense need to have sharp, flammable, and otherwise potentially hazardous objects *exactly* where they belong, and accept that yes, she DOES need to check four times that the stove is off.

Better she checks four times for no reason than that she doesn't check and it's on all night...

As far as I am concerned, the "right" knife is the one that is clean (or can be easily cleaned), within reach, and gets the job done.

I am much the same, but as noted above, on calmer consideration I get it, and in fact am kind of glad she's developing these kinds of habits.

My mom (mostly) adores my cooking, although she darkly (and correctly) suspects me of Plotting To Make Her Eat More Vegetables, and is currently also Deeply Impressed with me because I know how to take her stove apart for cleaning. This is strictly My Shit.

For half a moment, reading this entry, I was under the impression your mother was the one giving you these feelings, not your own brain weasels. VERY glad to reread and note I was wrong. (And see it confirmed in the comments).

No, my mom's great. Occasionally madder than a box of frogs, see also "THAT IS NOT THE BREAD KNIFE", but a) aren't we all and b) only very rarely in ways that seriously interfere with my relationship with her.
