oh, that does sound interesting! I read many of those authors, and one of my absolute faves was Elsie Lee, who had some real doozies (Curse of Carranca, anyone)

Joan Aiken too: The Butterfly Picnic, Hate Begins at Home/Dark Interval, Last Movement, The Embroidered Sunset, The Fortune Hunters, The Trouble With Product X and The Silence of Herondale I'd say all qualify.

Have read many-most of these names with great pleasure, have missed out on Jane Aiken Hodge until now, and M.M. Kaye. Will investigate. Is Mary Roberts Rinehart a contender? Is 20th-C Gothic marginal or foundational?

I don't see why not Mary Roberts Rinehart: The Lady Vanishes is pretty classic Girl Meets Trouble.
