First, Dave Allen on the topic of religion (specifically, scary nuns).

Secondly, when I saw that item I forwarded it a friend who's a feminist, a Catholic and an academic, all relevant in this case and her view is that there's a lot of spin in how the report's being treated and that the issues are a lot more complicated and nuanced than's coming out; yes, there are clearly areas of concern but it's a longer-running issue of authority between different segments of the Church going back possibly a decade and the spin being put on it - and pinning it just to a single health-care leaflet - is unhelpful and inaccurate.

I am completely unsurprised, though I'll hazard a slightly snarky guess that the nuanced version doesn't look too good on Benny And The Bishops either.

And very fond of Dave Allen, who used to be on British Columbia television in the 70s and who I therefore grew up with, weirdly enough.

Oh, I don't believe it does, but I'm getting a bit uneasy at the way Care2Cares plays Catholic stories at present: take this one for example. I mean, everyone who has even a passing interest in the matter knows that a) Papal infallibility only became a tenet of the Church in the 1870s; and b) to say something has been "set forth infallibly" is a technical expression, stating that it's an ex curia statement of core doctrine* so cheap snark like

Oh right! Infallibility! Like when the Church was totally right about geocentrism! Also? Jesus only hung out with dudes, therefore women are totally unworthy of being priests.

just seems like a really crap tactic, to me, since misstating one's opponent's position to score a cheap point is something I really dislike when the other side do it, and I can't in conscience attack their doing it unless I speak up when people on my side do it too.




*This doesn't mean I agree with it, and I understand the conflict between the nuns and the bishops may have something to do with their doubting it too

I admit I don't know them from a bag of hammers and used them for a link mostly because they were the last in a set of five or six places I'd followed the story.

I think I shall not use them again.

I find them quite a useful source of links but I've got into the habit of cross-checking their reports against other sources.
