So, seriously, when did it start to be socially acceptable and even normal to greet the news of someone's death by convening an inquiry on the spot to decide whether they "deserve" sympathy or not?

Ok, actually, forget that question. how do we make it stop?

I first noticed it with regard to the death on K2 of Alison Hargreaves , whom a colleague knew personally. Having heard that story - however, it put into context my father's story about two teachers dying in the Lake District in - I think - 1952 and the district turning out for them (subtext "they had no business being there") and gave particular context both to the Challenger disaster and - I repeat, without apology - the peculiarly vile Australian reaction to the rescue of Isabelle Austissier, compared to - say - that of Tony Bullimore.
