Minor fannish concerns

1) I am unconditionally in favour of Moar Femslash, but while I am in awe of the amazing and creative ways in which writers make Joan Watson/Moriarty work, Moriarty does not deserve nice things, and Joan Watson is a very nice thing. Result: frustration.

2) I told fairestcat and fajrdrako that I needed to post this: I am forever condemned to be A Fake Comics Geek, for I will never have a pull box. Because I read my wife's comics and genuinely cannot think of a situation where I'd want to read something she wasn't reading often enough to get my own box.

3) I am genuinely impressed by this week's Castle and how it managed not to Do The Sexist Tropey Thing this week. I was all ready to be furious and ended up going You Brilliant Bastards.

Ooooh, what happened on Castle? If it's the episode I saw (part of) last night, I'm curious how the Sexist Trope was avoided - I actually gave up and went to take a shower before it ended, because that was how strong the Sexist Trope vibe was coming through. What happened?

1) I would be pleased to see more neutral and positive female roles in Elementary, yes. While Joan has excellent tension with the female villains, that is in no way healthy sex-relationship building. =|

3) -- Really? I keep bouncing off Castle whenever I try watching an episode. Which one is this?

Castle veers unpredictably but reliably between Utterly Wrenching and COMPLETELY WHACKADOODLE. I think to enjoy it you have the enjoy that particular tension/release cycle a lot.

That is a great way to describe it. Apparently, that is a thing that I like. I never would have expected to say so, but it's what makes me keep watching Castle when heaps of other shows have fallen off my radar. I'm enjoying Forever at the moment but I do find myself wishing there was more COMPLETELY WHACKADOODLE there, for instance.

If I do keep watching Forever, and I think I probably will if it gets renewed, it'll be for the chemistry between Ioan Gruffudd and Judd Hirsch. What's sad is that I can't even remember the lady detective's name [wry g].

Same here! I'm in it for a) Ioan Gruffudd's lovely sexy calming face, b) the awesome father/son thing between Henry and Abe. I do like Det. Jo Martinez, but the boys are really carrying the show.

(Distant c), I liked the Henry/dominatrix plot a few episodes back, and apparently she's returning? I could get into that as a ship, more than Henry/Jo which I like best as friends.)

I kind of wish they'd stick with COMPLETELY WHACKADOODLE, personally. This the *how* manyth time Beckett's been kidnapped???

See, I totally get that but I can only watch so much Whackadoodle Police Show before the amount of Serious they're ignoring starts to drive me nuts. Whereas if it's all Grim, I can't handle that longterm either.

Ah. And I look at it the same way I look at a screwball romantic comedy movie. It's supposed to be a fantasy, not real.

I admit whackadoodle is much harder to maintain over a long period of time, and Castle's been around, for, what? [googles] seven seasons now as opposed to a two-hour movie.

Yeah. I enjoy romcoms, but Whackadoodle Homicide is tricky - sooner or later something happens that's just not funny, and if the characters are laughing it off I find that hard to watch.

Also, to be fair, so far everyone except Ryan's been kidnapped. Well, Espo's was a hostage situation, but still.

I know it wasn't a kidnapping, but Ryan and Espo getting caught in that collapsed building the day Ryan's wife goes into labor counts, I think. Speaking of gutwrenching...

Of course, the problem with this is that no given episode will reliably tell you if you like Castle, because while the quality is consistently high, the TONE veers all over the place.

Oh, fair enough. I've cherry-picked a couple series (looking at you, Primeval...) for maximum 'I am likely to enjoy this more than its neighbours', which is one of the reasons I asked. =)

Man, I have hardly seen any Castle, but I did like what I saw--and was really amazed that the one post-marriage episode I saw, they'd managed not to de-power Beckett or mess up their dynamic by having them get together. That's pretty rare!

(Now terribly curious about this week's spoiler, though. :D)

I think you still count, let's just put it that way. That's not an axis along which I consider it reasonable to rate people's fannishness, on the rare occasions when I think fannishness-rating is appropriate. ;)

Oh, I think I do too - I'm just amused that I'm so surrounded by Geek Grrls with astonishing collections that there is absolutely no point in starting my own. I only buy comics myself when I'm travelling.
