... About fangirls who would like to like makeup but don't quite know what to do with it.

If I brought my full makeup kit to MJ and/or WisCon, would people like me to do their faces before the dances? I've taken two courses in, and have some experience with, theatre makeup and I can do anything from super-subtle to smoky/pinup/sexpot to full on glitter machine. Subject to panel assignments at WisCon and roomies' needs at MJ, I'm willing to spend 2-3 hours each time on this, which is 8-12 faces.

I can do basic FX work as well, but this must be pre-negotiated as I will need to bring quite specific stuff and I may need to send you shopping.

I am also willing, if asked, to talk about what I am doing while I do it.

If enough people express interest that I do pack the whole kit, I will purchase a packet of disposable mascara wands and also one of disposable eye-makeup applicators, for safety, though I am also happy to guide people in buying their own mascara.

Please feel free to repost, etc.

Please note that I think compulsory makeup and compulsory feminine display are abominations. This offer is for people who would enjoy this, and this comment section is not your space to vent about how much you loathe makeup or girliness. I don't loathe it. I enjoy it. I'm a femme, and I don't feel like being beat up for it.

ETA: somehow I'd missed that sparkymonster and a few other people already do this at WisCon. Am reaching out to them to make sure I'm not stepping on their thing and see if I can join them. Will update.

ETA2: I'm an idiot. You absolutely do not have to identify as a fan*girl* to have makeup! Makeup for all as wants it!

i always wanted to really learn how to do a full makeup, but never did. ah, well. i can be girly without it! (i know how to do a little bit, which is all i wear. and that's ok, too.)

A phrase I heard, and liked, at last year's WisCon was "consensual makeup".

If both you and the person being made-up are willing, I'd be interested in hearing some of the process talk at WisCon. I know just enough to know that there's a lot of complexity that I don't know.

Also, I'm completely in agreement about makeup and other appearance modifications being, in a right and just world, the person's choice. There could be an essay here about local vs global (space and time-span) thinking, but let's just say both the "must" and "must not" views are short-sighted.

I do see that this isn't a right and just world, and that the things we do have effects; I just have been ... a little burnt in the past when I've posted how-tos about shaving or makeup or self-tanner or other girly stuff and gotten back rants on what a waste of time and all that is wrong in life HAVING to do X is. With which I firmly agree, put like that, but it still felt a bit like taking a slap, in context.

I wish I were going! I have a good handle on Subtle, and I can do a creditable job with Goth (at least, I can produce one combination that works for it), but WOW, would I love more guidance on Pin-Up.

Alas, finances do not permit.

Pin-up is very like subtle, only with more colour saturation and a bit less blending; think 'cartoon', where each part is strongly defined: this is the eyelid, this is the brow, etc. Does that make any sense? Try applying the eyeliner and brow colour from a damp qtip, or over a thin coating of lipgloss, so it stays precise.

Oh, and use a brilliant red lippy, toned to go well on your skin, and do the whole lipliner-two-coats-powder-between-coats rigamarole. :)

Do you have experience working with people of color? I'm African American, and I would love to have you work with me at MJ if you can. :)

I do not have much, but I follow several columns/blogs about it and can consult with sparkymonster beforehand. You might want to pick up your own foundation, if you want some, (I'll take a look at who does good tones for AA skin) but depending on what effect you want I can manage the rest, I think.

Oh I will be at MJ and that sounds really fun! (I have managed fairly minimal makeup my ownself but have never achieved sexpot or glittery, and would love some combo of those two if that could in fact work with my Dr. Who-ish glasses.) I will check on my scheduling & get back to you.

Random person here, but: I'd be totally interested in this at MJ! I adore makeup and have fun with it, but often feel like I have no clue what I'm doing—only learned how to do eyeliner this year (at 30).

Have you much recent experience with people sensitive skin in terms of knowing what product lines are good choices to recommend? I havent worn makeup since I was in university because of a couple of negative experiences with supposedly "hypoallergenic" makeup then, but I as I do remember laying with makeup as a tween than I am suspicious that I may have just not been using good products. I've never learnt how to do anything other than eye shadow (badly) and lipstick.

If you (and/or Sparky) do this, I have a suggestion: I was there a couple years ago when she was doing it, and it was clearly great fun, but the lighting in the room was terrible! It was impossible to see what one was doing! Bringing extra lights would improve the whole party, I think.
