In May/June 1985 a friend and I had the three week VIA rail pass which allowed us to travel by rail across Canada for what was, even in those days, the surprisingly great value of $CAN 320*. A week or so after our return, she was troubled by a lump at the back of her head and took it to the doctor. Who said, effectively, "the lump is an inflamed black-fly bite; here's some ointment and there's nothing to worry about. But what we're going to rush you into hospital for emergency surgery is the six-inch ovarian cyst I've just detected."
*We could afford the ticket but not to eat in the dining car, so had to take food which would not go off, which could be eaten cold without preparation and which preferably came in tins, for ease of transportation. When the annals of the trip come to be written "Across Canada by Sardine" is likely to be the title.
