Re: problem #179: For the first time in my life this year I have a Canadian keyboard. AHAHAHA.

Shoes! In the house! I still do it sometimes when I'm in a hurry, but it always feels All Wrong.

Surrey! LOL

I am actually unaware of which key to hit to get that special character, although this keyboard has a / key where I expect the corner of the shift or hard return to be, which ends up with me typing

Hi, how are you/ I had a good morning/1

instead of

Hi, how are you?
I had a good morning!

Drives me batty! But I didn't realize I had the "Canadian" keyboard until after I got the otherwise-awesome laptop, so.

The one I don't get is "When the cat comes back the next day." Anyone want to explain that one?

I get the feeling that Surrey is kind of...oh hell, I have a *feeling* that the word "Surrey" invokesm but don't know how to explain it. It's kind of one of the non-awesome portions of Greater Vancouver, I gather, not in the economically depressed way so much as the lifeless, soulless way...but I don't think I'm describing it well. Someone native to the region, help?

My keyboard gets stuck on French sometimes and there is nothing at all that I can do to make it go back except wait until it feels like it.

Is shoes in the house an American thing?

Have you tried hitting left-shift/left-ctrl simultaneously? That's how it flips for me.

OH I bet that's what mine does when it suddenly decides to be weird! I am never sure if it's the French-Canadien keyboard or the fact I've got mine set to "International" (with the umlaut shortkeys and such) and sometimes it wants to not do that when it's supposed to.

Left-CTRL/left-SHIFT, I'll keep an eye out for that!

I've seen #180 before over on Tumblr and was v. confused by it being a Canadian thing. (I'm USian, for reference -- Tennessean originally, if region matters). Shoes are not a thing you wear in the house, in general, and they sure as hell aren't a thing you wear in someone else's house. I mean, I run barefoot everywhere anyway but that's not even the point, the point is not being an ass who tracks dirt in all over someone else's house.

I dunno, I mean, I have heard of this being a thing other (USian) people do, but I was brought up that it's very rude.

In May/June 1985 a friend and I had the three week VIA rail pass which allowed us to travel by rail across Canada for what was, even in those days, the surprisingly great value of $CAN 320*. A week or so after our return, she was troubled by a lump at the back of her head and took it to the doctor. Who said, effectively, "the lump is an inflamed black-fly bite; here's some ointment and there's nothing to worry about. But what we're going to rush you into hospital for emergency surgery is the six-inch ovarian cyst I've just detected."

*We could afford the ticket but not to eat in the dining car, so had to take food which would not go off, which could be eaten cold without preparation and which preferably came in tins, for ease of transportation. When the annals of the trip come to be written "Across Canada by Sardine" is likely to be the title.
